Confidence...
"Confidence doesnt come from words it comes from accumulated skills." -John Danaher (world renowned jiu jitsu coach)
Change your mindset around fitness, nutrition or health goals by getting better at the physical skills entailed. While listening to the legendary @danaherjohn on @lexfridman podcast I heard this quote. It was in reference to how his athletes all have such a champion’s mindset. They walk out on the biggest stages, under the brightest lights and perform. Like there’s ice in their veins.
Sure, there’s likely some biology involved here. Some of us just handle high stress environments differently than others. But there’s also a huge environmental aspect.
I think to more conventional sports figures like Kobe or Jordan or Brady. Was there confidence inborn or did they just know that their skills were so great that they could perform 100% of the time? All are renowned for their grueling practice regimens, their attention to cross training and (in the case of Brady) even some wacky nutrition and recovery strategies. They put all their efforts into being over-prepared.
This doesn’t mean we should expect to be the MJ of our health goals but it can help us to understand how to become more effective.
Want to feel more motivated towards your goals? Practice and improvements in the skills you want to learn will help internalize that motivation so that it just becomes “automatic”.
These skills can be lifting weights, walking more, getting better in the kitchen, practicing emotional regulation, meditating, journaling, etc.
Building confidence will improve every aspect of your life. It’s worth the effort.
