"Just tell me what to do..."
As a practitioner, I'm not here to give you a list of solutions. I'm here to help guide you towards your own answers. We all want to be told what to do. But that's never helped anyone long term.
I get it, it’s way easier to just be told what to do and then execute. And there are clients of mine that do get that treatment. They all have aspirations of podium spots on the world stage of their chosen sport as well. So if you’re not a top 5 world class contender in sport, this probably doesn’t apply.
For the other 99.9999% of you, you’re going to have to be the one that puts in the leg work to change. I can write the best nutrition plan ever with the perfect workout and include every behavioral intervention I know and if will fail miserably 9 times out of ten. Because it’s not yours.
After a lifetime of (unsuccessful) dieting we crave a sense of control. Maybe we’ve given up some other vice/coping mechanism or have encountered new stressors in our lives. And having control over food can help us feel like we’ve got everything else together.
But inevitably the house of cards comes tumbling down. And it doesn’t just bring the pizza and ice cream with it. We quickly realize how intertwined our behaviors around food are with everything we do.
So when you think about how you could finally change if someone just told you what to do, think back on how that’s worked in the past. And if you’re referencing weight loss, it only worked if it stayed off.
Losing weight only to regain it all is a vicious cycle we want to break. And no amount of rules or directions are going to change that. No. That change has to come from you.
