Stop looking outside yourself

It’s much easier to have someone do the work for us. We may not like to admit it but this is often how we rationalize our own failures. We keep looking outside for what only we can provide.

“I just need... to be successful.”

Bullshit. If it were that simple you would have already done it. That book or podcast or IG post would have been all you needed to make it work. Yet never in the history of pseudo-motivational garbage has anyone actually benefited from 10 seconds of inspiration. No, the impetus to change has to come from inside you.

In AA the phrase is rock bottom. Some times we have to be so sick and tired of being sick and tired that we give up willfulness and surrender. It might not always require this amount of desperation but often times that is the greatest motivator. When I finally gave up drinking the driving force was simply that I didn’t want to die. I wasn’t changing for anyone else. It was just me.

So stop finding your excuse by assigning responsibility to others. No one else can give you what you need, that lives inside you. We will all fail at times, and that’s on us. But it’s also on us when we finally succeed. So look inside and never let anyone take that away.
