Balance
We often think of balance as peaceful harmony. Yet, in reality, balance is achieved through opposition.
Physicality, nature, life are all environments in constant opposition.
The human body is a composition of agonist and antagonist muscles, a musculoskeletal system moving between lordotic and kyphotic curves, running in flux on energy consumed and energy expelled. The body craves homeostasis not by a passive method of observation but constantly pushing and pulling to create a malleable, anti-fragile organism.
So why do we, as humans, try to deny the existence of our own duality? Why do we believe that harmony exists without tension? This is the dialectical nature of life; two seemingly opposing truths can coexist.
We want to lose weight yet we also want to eat pizza and drink beer. We want to get fit but we also want to sleep in and skip the gym. We want to make more money but we want to work less and do other things.
It’s important to stop trying to ignore our duality. Stop trying to bury the opposing forces. Instead work to understand the purpose of that force and how it can actually help us to find balance.
Balance is not the absence of effort. Balance is achieved through constant and consistent work to achieve what we want. Action, not passivity, will drive your desire for balance.
Stop looking for the magic bullet. Stop chasing easy.
