What's next doesn't matter... yet
When starting on a journey of transformation, be it physical or mental or spiritual, it is easy to be enamored but the finish line. After all, we took these first steps because we envisioned the person we could be. While we might have just taken our first steps, we see the rippling muscles of the thoroughbred we could become. And so we think about what the thoroughbred is capable of. How their gait looks. What they eat. But we are just fumbling foals falling over our new legs. We need to start with one step.
A nutritional journey is no different. We need to learn the simple, boring stuff. Understanding what foods are made up of, the importance of whole foods in our diets, how movement incorporates into our daily expenditure. Most of all, we need to learn to create consistency. Without that, nothing will work long term. Unfortunately, consistent effort over time isn’t very sexy.
It’s easy to be distracted by worrying about what’s next or working on something new or trying out new protocols. But distractions are distractions regardless of where they live. The biggest obstacle to success is being able to see your goal while focusing on what is in front of you in that moment. Stop tripping over your own feet rushing to a destination.
Be boring. Be consistent. Stop worrying about what’s shiny and new. Put your efforts into doing the common thing uncommonly well. And before you know it you will be more and more competent at the basics. Learn to walk and you will be ready to run. But if you keep trying to sprint in those baby legs, you’ll continue to fall on your face.
